The Business of Resource Management Initiative

Resource management plays a critical role in how organizations grow, perform, deliver, and scale. Yet in many organizations, it continues to be viewed primarily as an operational function focused on staffing, allocations, utilization, and schedules.

We believe that perspective is too narrow.

The reality is that resource management influences many of the outcomes leaders care most about, including revenue realization, profitability, customer outcomes, workforce productivity, employee experience, and organizational agility. When demand, capacity, skills, and priorities are not aligned, the impact is often felt across the business.

The Business of Resource Management Initiative was created to elevate resource management as a strategic driver of business performance.

Through thought leadership, executive perspectives, research, white papers, and webcasts, the initiative will explore the connection between resource management and organizational results. It challenges conventional thinking about the role resource management plays in business success and examines how organizations can position resource management to create greater strategic impact.

Whether you are building a Resource Management Office (RMO), maturing an existing function, or seeking to elevate resource management’s role within your organization, these resources are designed to help leaders move the conversation beyond resource coordination and toward business performance.

Featured within this initiative is the RMI’s Business of Resource Management series, which explores how resource management influences key business outcomes and what it takes to evolve the discipline into a strategic organizational capability.

Join us Wednesday, September 9 at 11:30 AM ET / 8:30 AM PT

Resource management plays a central role in how services organizations deliver, perform, and scale. However, its value is often misunderstood and confined to scheduling and coordination rather than recognized as a core business capability. This Power Up will explore how resource management connects strategy to results, shaping revenue, margin, predictability, and scalability. We’ll examine the shift from tactical coordination to a system that enables consistent business performance, and what it takes to position resource management as a non-negotiable function.

The Business of Resource Management Article Series

Part One of the Business of Resource Management series challenges how resource management is commonly understood within services organizations. Often viewed as scheduling or coordination, it is instead positioned as a core business system that connects strategy to results. The article explores how resource management directly influences growth, margin, and delivery performance, and why organizations that under-design or under-position it risk limiting their ability to perform consistently, particularly as complexity increases and business conditions evolve. Read the full article.

Part Two examines the business impact of ineffective resource management and how it often goes unrecognized. Rather than appearing in a single metric, the cost shows up across revenue, margin, delivery, and workforce outcomes. Drawing on RMI research, this article highlights how organizations struggle to convert visibility into action, leading to inefficiencies that become normalized and compound over time. It reframes common business challenges as symptoms of misalignment between demand, talent, and priorities. Read the full article.
